The Immune System, referred to as Wei Qi in energetic medicine, is a vital component to physiology and health. The strength of one’s Wei Qi is critical for protection from diseases originating internally and externally. When Wei Qi is weak, pathogens from the environment - including those of a bacterial or viral nature - can easily penetrate. Alternatively, when the individual’s Wei Qi is strong, these external pathogens cannot enter the body, and if they do, the body can easily rid itself of them.

Welcome to part 3 of the acupuncture point combination series, which takes you on a journey through the Five Elements (Wǔ Xíng). These elements are typically not taught thoroughly at Chinese medicine institutions (unless it is a Five Elements school) and so it became clear to me that I needed to write a course that could access as many students and practitioners of our art as possible.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder characterized by excessive androgen secretion and is linked with obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, and affects up to 17% of women in reproductive age. We have also demonstrated that women with PCOS have epigenetic and transcriptional changes in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue relevant for development of disease3,4.

Ever since IVF (and especially ICSI) was introduced to the world stage, it immediately became the “go to” procedure to help infertile couples. This occurred without scientific validation of its safety or formal study of its cost-effectiveness or medical “value.” Significant research has since been published that compares classical treatments for male infertility, including medical therapy, lifestyle and diet changes, varicocele repair, vasectomy reversal and ejaculatory duct resection, to assisted reproduction (including IUI).

Western medical herbs in Chinese Medicine are gaining more and more importance, due to the availability of very good quality medicinal herbs and the great acceptance from the patient’s side. The well-structured and very practice-oriented approach of Integrative Chinese Medicine offers an excellent opportunity for therapists to give their patients the best of three fields: conventional medicine, Chinese medicine and phytopharmacology of western medical herbs.

Endometriosis is a complicated chronic inflammatory condition. When patients are successful at conceiving, some are able to improve their endometriosis whilst others find it worsens and can develop into adenomyosis. Both conditions require a few key etiological considerations for treatment that reflect the sophistication and complexity of the conditions. Endometriosis and adenomyosis are both multifactorial and comprehensive by nature and are often simplified by clinicians which produce poor outcomes and reduced treatment success.

After 15 years of intensive and broad-based research, TCM has become a staple of Assisted Reproductive Technology care plans. As is true in Western Medicine research, TCM research is not without its controversies.
