The Traditional Chinese and Indigenous Medicines Program (TCIMP) in British Columbia, Canada: An integrative care model.

This is a free webinar for the love of learning. No CEU/CPD/PDA

The presentation describes a program that started five years ago as a 6-month pilot project to assess the potential of traditional medicines to promote health and healing in BC First Nations.

The idea was developed through a creative partnership that included the First Nation Health Authority, Tzu Chi Foundation, and Simon Fraser University. Our thinking was that instead of studying deficits in health, we would bring together those who know and understand traditional medicines – in theory and philosophy as well as in practice.

The partnership vision was that we could develop a formula for healthcare provision that could be expanded to residents throughout the province.

The program involves a successful collaboration governed by a BC First Nation with integration among Western and traditional medical practitioners, and community prevention and health promotion teams.

Underpinning TCIMP are core essential values, i.e., respect and interconnection with others inside and beyond the community and the natural ecologies. Participants have transitioned from passivity to agency in their relationship with health practitioners.

Measurable differences over the years are noted in chronic health conditions, e.g., diabetes, respiratory illnesses, hypertension, and obesity. The program has helped participants to quit using/abusing opiates, alcohol and/or drugs.
