Gratitude in Search of Happiness

There was a period of time in my life I was unhappy even though I had a successful clinical practice and a rewarding online company (Pro D Seminars) . Regardless of how much was going right in my life on the surface, I often felt like a fraud and experienced a low level of anxiety.

Aware I had to make a change within that would lead to a change in my thinking and perception, I began a daily practice of gratitude. Within a month I noticed a shift. It feels silly to have to remind yourself to be thankful, but in our society, we often get lost in the race of keeping up with others that we neglect to appreciate all things we can be grateful for in lives. The bottom line is that it doesn’t matter what kind of material riches you have in your life, if you cannot regularly feel gratitude then you will not regularly experience happiness.

Have you ever noticed when you’re in the market for a new car that you begin to notice the car you want on the road everywhere? It is not because there are suddenly more people driving Honda Civics (or whichever car you may have your sights on), but rather because you have put your intention on black Honda civics. Doing this prompts your brain’s reticular activating system to focus on looking for this car (your subconscious sees everything) and to bring it to your conscious awareness. Hence you start to notice your car.  It is not that there are more black Honda Civics on the road, you are just now noticing them.  Hence, Where the mind goes, the Qi follows. What you focus on becomes your reality.

Starting to practice gratitude daily can be as simple as writing down 3 original thoughts at the end of your day about things you are grateful for and why. This practice forces you to review the last 24 hour period searching for what is going right on your life and becomes the humble beginnings of rewiring your brain to notice gratefulness. 

In a social media driven world, it is more important now than ever to note that it is not the environment or events in your life that determine your happiness, but how you perceive and experience them. By focusing on gratitude, you will change the filter of how you view your world. And don’t forget that like attracts like - you will start to see opportunities appear in your life as if invisible hands of the universe have opened doors for you that you did not even know existed. 

Use it to resolve your fear and anxiety and increase your happiness quotient.
